Reflective Journal for Session 1

In the first session of teaching my tutee through google meet. I could say that it is challenging because of technical issues cause by unstable internet connectivity for some time. But still I was able to finished the lesson for this session. With this, I realized that teaching needs an effort and determination in imparting knowledge to the learner.

While we are in discussion part, I’ve noticed that it is important to have interaction between me and my tutee to make sure that she understand what I am saying. Asking my tutee on what her opinion is a nice way to determine what she already know or what she got on my explanation. In numeracy part, giving example is needed because it helped my tutee to fully understand the concept and the application of formula. I remember one of the strategy in teaching is learning by doing which the students allow to work on their own pace but the teacher serves as facilitator for elaboration and explanation if necessary.

At the end of the discussion and evaluation, I’m happy that she got a passing score and this indicates that my tutee able to understand our discussion. Thus, we can proceed to the next lesson for the next session and I thankful for having her as my tutee.

JOURNAL ENTRY NO.1: MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Teaching is not an easy process just like only imparting knowledge to the learner, but it is long and repeated process. It includes more consideration from the curriculum guide, learning outcomes, learning strategies, resources, students, and time allotment. I believe that every learner has different learning styles, experiences, interests, attitudes, and beliefs which is needed to consider in planning and management of the teaching and learning process. Also, I believe that the appropriate strategies are required to apply for effective teaching and learning because it will lead to meet the learning outcomes and learning competencies as well.

Inside the classroom, I want that my students are comfortable physically and socially which they can study as well as can communicate with their classmates and to me to feel the positive classroom environment. I will teach my students to be culturally diverse to avoid discrimination and learn to respect everyone’s opinion. During the class, I prefer that my students are actively engage in the discussion like using cooperative learning, asking questions about how they understand the lesson, and/or let them to compute the given examples and explain how they did that. Likewise, in some of the time, I want to teach them through creative ways of learning such as educational games which they need to walk or to think faster to maintain the energy of the students. Also, I will integrate technology in our discussion like providing PowerPoint presentation as an instructional materials and it is helpful to create appropriate illustrations such as shapes because of the features that it has. In addition, I can use math applications and online sites for the activity of the students wherein it will help them to enhance their technological skills.

Additionally, I will make consultation time as giving a chance to my students to raise their concerns or problems on me to address it and keep as confidential. In terms of assessment, I feel that the assessment tools should be aligned with the learning outcomes and also important to consider the students’ ability and resources. I think it is necessary to always give a diagnostic test to know what the students already know and it will serve as a guide to me on what are the things that I will need to teach. Moreover, I will communicate to the parents about the performance of their child or if there’s some problem, I think asking them about what’s happening to their child why he/she acting like that is the best to solve the problem.

As a future teacher, my goals are first, to make sure that my students learn from me, not only those who are excellent but also those who feel difficulty in Mathematics. The second one, to make my students realize the importance of Mathematics in their daily life. The third one is to respond on my students’ needs in terms of learning and make them good citizen. And, the last one is to teach them about personal matters like time management and how to survive in studying; I also want my students to feel belongingness.

JOURNAL NO.5: TEAMWORK

As I learned in module 6, teamwork is about working together of the member to complete the tasks and achieve the desire goal. While reading this, it comes in my mind that being a teacher someday, I will meet different teachers inside the campus and in faculty room as well. With this, I will consider my co-teachers that we are a team because it is important to us to be in the same side in doing our duties. Being a team inside the faculty is important to have good communication and culturally diverse as we teach in our class. Helping each other in the faculty room may result have a good quality of education in a certain campus where we are teaching.

Additionally, as I observed in the school, the teachers that act as one team are happier, less stress, no hatred and no competition; they are doing only their task, helping each other and respect everyone’s thoughts. I also noticed that in terms of conducting/joining in the program, even they are not good in designing the stage, in dancing or any other activities, still they successfully did it because of teamwork and determination. Most of the time, the result became better than expected because of the combined ideas, helping hands, and in trust and support they gave to each other.

Moreover, I think becoming a team in the workplace is the best thing we can do because teamwork can result to have great productivity and achieve the mission and vision of the school. Through showing teamwork, I think it can be an example for the students to do the same to avoid competitiveness and selfishness. Being a team can reduce stress because of collaboration, brainstorming and doing the assigned task having a trust to each other. I can say that we need to act as team to show that we are united in giving services, facing challenges, adapting new strategies and in teaching the youth. Similarly, if we are a team, during the conflict happen, it is easy to resolve because both sides are willing to listen in the explanation of each other side and whatever be the decision, they should respect it without hatred or take as personal issue.

Lastly, in this module, I think that the quotation “Coming together is beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success” by Henry Ford can be inserted because it shows teamwork which lead to success of everyone in a team and the team itself.

JOURNAL NO.4: LEADERSHIP

“You can do what I cannot do. I can do what you cannot do. Together we can do great things.” This quotation of Mother Theresa can define one of the characteristic of a good leader which is giving trust and believe to each member. I think the cooperation of every member in one organization is very important as to know each other side, opinion and suggestions. The leader cannot productive output without the help of the member and the same with member, he/she cannot do productive output without the help of their leader and his/her co-member. Great leader must possess different positive characteristics to manage the entire organization and can provide good and performance of services.

While reading module, I remember myself when I was in Junior High School because I became the Vice President of Student Supreme Government. With that I realized that I am not good leader because I only possess some of the qualities of a good leader and we only have few program and project since our school is under development. Another thing, I realized that leader is not only the one who command what to do but also the first one to do the command and will be followed by the members. I also observed about not a good leader. She is the manager of one agency and she doesn’t want to listen to some opinion of her employees; it’s like whatever she told and that’s all. She doesn’t want to hear any questions unless that person is close with her. In relation with this, I think that kind of leader is not good to be idealize and needs to undergo training about leadership for herself and for the agency.

Back to my life again, I remember that on the previous month my classmates told me that they want me to be the President of our organization. But I cannot see myself on that position and it is hard for me to do the responsibilities. So, as I read in this module, I found out I am still not qualified to be a good leader, it seems like I only possess a half of the listed qualities of a good leader. On the other hand, if that will happen, I have no choice but to serve for them; so, I will need to adapt those qualities of a good leader. Also, I hope that I will acquire lessons, qualities and strategies through the topics in LTS. Moreover, as a pre-service teacher, I will need to become great leader to be able to handle my class and making sure that everyone is learning from me. Not only to handle the students but maybe with my co-teacher as well like having school program/event and in doing school requirements. As for my goal today, I will need be a good leader as a student, as a pre-service teacher and a citizen of this nation.

CHARACTER ANALYSIS OF A GREAT LEADER

Mother Theresa is a founder of Order of the Missionaries of Charity and a Roman Catholic who is dedicated to help poor and sick people. She was born to serve with God as she experienced the “call within a call” which means she is being called to religious life. I accessed this information through the article entitled Mother Theresa Biography from The Biography.com website written by Biography.com Editors. It was published on April 27,2017 but it has been updated last February 24,2020 and can be retrieved from https://www.biography.cm/religious-figure/mother-theresa.

Mother Theresa was live for 87 years and she is known as Saint Theresa of Calcutta. She is religious person, caring, helpful, soft-hearted, humane, and generous specifically to the poor and sick people a founder of the Missionaries of Charity. She was devoted to Christ and became a teacher in saint Mary’s High School for Girls. Mother Theresa is one of the Christian leaders since she was a Roman catholic and being called to religious life. She travelled to different places to help the poor people to educate them through her Charity and acquired different names like Sister Mary Theresa and Mother Theresa. She put God as her power to serve and share the lessons/words from our Almighty God. Mother Theresa is a great leader who showed a humanistic and promoting to put God in a center of everyone’s life. Through this she considered as the greatest humanitarians of 20th century.

Mother Theresa showed empathy and commitment to serve people, not only to her fellowmen but also internationally. After she died, miracles happened to some people who healed on their severe illness and Pope Francis issued a decree recognizing the miracle attributed to Mother Theresa. I believe that all people who in touch by Mother Theresa were very thankful and blessed for what she did. I think the Missionaries of Charity is one her legacy wherein a great number of people received education and religious services wherein by the time of her death, the Missionaries of Charity number more than 4000 with 610 foundations in 123 countries around the world.

To sum it up, Mother Theresa brought her life to serve the world. She aimed that no one is behind and everyone is deserved to have care even the poor people. She was nicely to consider as a model to every leaders and individual. And also, she said this “By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus” which it showed her generosity, kindness and spiritual leader.

JOURNAL NO.3: IMPORTANCE OF FILIPINO VALUE SYSTEM

Upon reading module 4, I learned about Filipino values system both positive and negative. It feels good that we have more positive values than negative because it showed that we are good person. Values are one of our identity as an individual so it is important for everyone to leave a good impression. But I can’t deny that I have bad attitudes which I wanted to remove those that I can.

It was stated in module 4 about positive values like camaraderie, damayan system and many others. It is important for us to have value system because that can be a way to be connected to each other. In my observation, camaraderie or pakikipagkapwa-tao and damayan system are very important because in terms of problems we need people to comfort us and we can have them if we treated them in a nice way. I experienced this situation among my family and friends like in my studies and personal matters which I need someone to cheer me up. When I read the word “camaraderie”, I remember my teammates in athletics last intramural meet because we showed this “pakikipagkapwa-tao”. We met and interacted with other athlete even we’re not on the same team and take a pictures too as a remembrance.

Moreover, close family tie is another values of Filipino wherein we have this values in my family. I am really happy if I am with my family like eating and laughing together. We treasure each of our relatives because it’s nice and happy to see that we celebrate Christmas day, New Year and Birthdays together. I grow up with my family and relatives but I became far from them when I entered in college. With this, I experienced sadness and homesick because that is new set up for us but we have no choice only to be strong. In terms of sorrow, I remember our grandmother who passed away five months ago. As expected, at first I and my family wanted to cry and cry all over again and comfort each other. But after a weeks, we learned to accept it and keep moving on. We started to smile and continue our life because Filipinos are resilient and optimistic.

It is very important to have those Filipino values because it have a lot of benefits on me and in other people like getting happiness, support, worth as person, a lot of friends and positive mind. Through Filipino value system, I think it helping me in my growth and development physically, socially, emotionally, spiritually and in intellectual. It also builds myself and being soft-hearted as I learned and adapted from my family and community.

SELF-CASE STUDY

Since when I was born, my parents livelihood is farming. So, we live in the edge of the mountain where electricity was not available and even gadgets. I live in a simple life; fresh fruits, vegetables and fishes live in the river are our primary foods. When I was 8 years old, I started to help my parents in farming like planting, cleaning and harvesting rice. Also, I started to do some household chores to help my parents since they are being tired in farming and other things that is needed have an income. I am the third child, I have two older brother and one younger brother on that time. But my first brother was not in us because he was studying in high school and stay in the house of our uncle in other barangay. I enjoyed being a child, play and laugh whenever it can be, climbing in the guava tree, hide and seek, and many more.

I am in grade 2 with that age (8 years old), my second year in studying and walking from our house to school with 3 km distance. Sometimes, if it is raining in the afternoon, I have no choice only to put my papers in a plastic bag and walk on the rain just to go home. Although, I still interested in studying because my parents say that it was the only way to improve our life even it is far and we have financial problem. During my early childhood, I experienced to ate rice once a day and the two meals, we only ate sweet potato, cassava or banana.

With those experienced, I think it contributed to my growth which results to me to have a dark skin and slim body because of work. I am the third child but I act as the first one because as I said earlier, my first brother was not in our house and my second brother was passed away when I was 9 years old. On the other hand, I learned to appreciate the little things happens in my life and able to do the household chores. Also, I learned to become industrious and pursue my studies to achieve my dreams and have worthy life. That part of my life (when I was 8 years old), I am thankful right now that even our house was far away from school, still I was able to study every day and didn’t stop. I am thinking about this, “what if I didn’t go to school? who and where I am right now?”. So, I am still blessed that I achieve this, that I reach the college level and after three or four years, I am hoping to have a work.

Moreover, being born and grow only with some of my relatives, I wasn’t able to develop enough self-confidence and to communicate with other people. Although, I encounter other people during elementary and high school days but still I feel shy. Until now, I am not confidently enough to speak in front of great number of people and continue fighting to achieve that. Since my parents disciplined me well, I was not become strong-headed to them, instead I become obedient and considerate to what they may be feel if I did something bad. I only quiet whenever they are anger or advising me to what I did wrong and that led me to control myself and my emotion. Nowadays, I can control my emotion and not harming other people. Whatever I feel that making me uncomfortable, I will just write my thoughts and whatever I wanted to say in my notes (apps in mobile phone) to release my emotion. Suddenly, I feel much better, can focus and can think to what should I do to solve that certain problem.

To conclude, I can say that history or past experiences of an individual can affect the way on how to deal in present situation. Also, it builds up the personality of the person. Bad memories could lead to wrong path but if we accept it and see its positive side, it will lead to new opportunities, lessons and become better as the time goes by. Just like what Oprah Winfrey says “Turn your wounds into wisdom”.

JOURNAL NO.2: MY DUTIES AND OBLIGATION AS A FILIPINO CITIZEN

After reading module 2, I learned about the rights, duties and responsibilities of a Filipino Citizen which it includes abiding laws that is implemented in the country. Just like what I had shared in my comment on our Facebook group, Thomas Jefferson says “Ignorance of the law is no excuses in any country. If it were, the laws would lose their effect, because it can always be pretended.”. It means that if I do against one of the law, I cannot be use the reason that I didn’t know that there an existing law like that. So, it is my duty to know the laws to limit and control myself to avoid doing against it.

I also read on it that it is one of my obligation as Filipino citizen to register and vote in times of election. On this part, I remember that I didn’t do this obligation on last election because I didn’t be able to go on our barangay to vote since I am here in Puerto Princesa City. I am hoping that I will always perform this obligation on the next election with wise decision in voting leaders in local and national. I think it also my duty to respect my fellowmen which I think most of the time I am doing this. In my observation in myself, I respect everyone’s thoughts, communicate with them in a respectful way specifically when it is our first time to talk to each other, if they are professional or elders and even younger than me or same with my age.

Furthermore, it is my duty to have a better life wherein I think I can achieve that if I will be able to get my licensed in teaching and teach well to impart knowledge to the youth. In connection with this, I can also help for the progress of the country through giving literacy and numeracy to the youth whom expected to be the hope of the country in the next generation. Lastly, I will consider this as my duty, to support the programs, activities or services that is being conducted or performed in the whole country and even those localized programs in line with showing unity and active.

JOURNAL NO.1: IMPORTANCE OF NSTP-LTS TO ME AS A STUDENT

Taking this subject, I think I will get benefits from this because as one of its objectives is to train and teach the students to acquire and create their principles in serving community. I can get a lot of experiences that will be helpful in handling class in the near future. As expected in LTS 2, we are going to the fieldwork which is the first step is to teach Badjao kids who needs education where most of them are less fortunate. I imagine that it is challenging for me to teach them since they only have few resources that can use in studying and I didn’t know them well which it will become hard for me to select the best strategy and on how to communicate with them. Although, after this training, I think my skills in teaching will be well-enhanced and I will become prepared for my job. In addition, I can learn to adjust myself in teaching students especially if I will be assign to the remote areas.

Moreover, Literacy Training Services can lead me and other students to show commitment and practice community service. I can also become a creative, resourceful, learn to control myself and handle my emotion. In mental aspect, it can enhance my critical thinking skills and problem solving skills in the times that I can encounter new situation or set up. For instance, our situation today, it is unexpected situation to happen in this world, no one is prepared for this. So, it became a challenge in our country especially in education sector which new learning mode has been implemented to continue the learning process. As one of the students taking LTS, I need to be skilled in solving problem in real life situation which I think it can acquire while taking LTS and even while teaching as a professional teacher.

I can already say that NSTP-LTS is beneficial subject that I can take wherein it improves my social and communication skills, thinking skills, emotional regulation skills and maintaining health and fitness while doing my duty. It is challenging in my part but is worth it to do.
